Lost Episodes $13.49 A 30-track compilation of rarities, spanning much of his career, but in the main confined to the 1960s and early ’70s (some date from as early as the late ’50s!). Much of it’s previously unreleased, or extremely hard to locate. It’s not just a collection of fan-oriented odds and ends, though. The material, for one thing, is extremely diverse, ranging from collaborations with Captain Beefheart and primitive teenage garage recordings to comic dialog to progressive instrumentals and orchestral pieces. The pre-Freak Out stuff in particular is revelatory, in the sense that it finds Zappa’s sophisticated compositional and arrangement skills in full bloom years before he made his proper debut. There’s also good old rock and roll, in an early version of “Any Way the Wind Blows,” and an early ’60s take of “Fountain of Love” with explosive fuzz bass. The cuts range in duration from 11 seconds to 11 minutes, often connected by amusing bits of spoken patter or nifty instrumental links. The effect is somewhat like Uncle Meat or Lumpy Gravy, meaning that those who appreciate that period of Zappa’s evolution will find an immediate affinity with this anthology. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Frank Zappa – Synclavier, Celeste, Kazoo, Vocals (Background), Guitar (Bass), Vocals, Drums, Piano, Percussion, Guitar, Synthesizer; Art Tripp – Vibraphone, Vocals (Background), Marimba; Don “Sugarcane” Harris – Electric Violin, Violin (Electric), Vocals, Violin; Elliot Ingber – Slide Guitar; Ian Underwood – Fender Rhodes, Woodwind, Saxophone, Keyboards, Percussion; Arthur Barrow – Guitar (Bass), Bass; Aynsley Dunbar – Drums; |

The Episodes $11.18 After the back-to-basics Plead the Fifth, Taproot once again get serious on The Episodes, an ambitious concept album that finds them reconnecting with their prog side without quite abandoning the churning nu-metal that brought them to the attention of Fred Durst at the beginning of their career. Despite those remnants of heavy fifth harmonies in the voices and guitars, The Episodes is certainly a record that flaunts its self-stylized complexities, frequently drifting into extended instrumental interludes, taking its time as it cascades from quiet to loud, often finding space for ominous recitals from a Speak & Spell. While the latter feels like a tired gimmick, on the whole The Episodes is refreshing when compared to the head-down rock of Plead the Fifth. Perhaps The Episodes never relates a coherent story line — it’s impossible to tell what the story is without too close of a listen — the album nevertheless gels musically and it’s one of the band’s better efforts. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Nick Fredell – Drums; Philip Lipscomb – Bass; Stephen Richards – Vocals |

Speed Racer – Episodes 1-11 $6.26 Rated: NASynopsis: Perhaps the most widely seen example of Japanese anime ever to hit America, Speed Racer has been entertaining kids of all ages ever since its U.S. television debut in 1967. Produced by Tatsunoko Productions (who would later create the equally beloved Battle of the Planets), Speed Racer follows the globe-trotting adventures of a teenage driver named Speed as he sits behind the wheel of the Mach-5, a gadget-laden super car built by his father. Haunted by the enigma of his missing older brother (who may or may not be the masked Racer X), Speed is supported by best gal, Trixie, his candy-addicted little brother, Spridle, and Spridle’s pet monkey, Chim Chim. Speed continually runs afoul of gangsters, rival drivers, and assorted sinister plots involving racetracks. Although the animation itself has aged considerably (albeit in a very charming fashion), the show itself is a still-unique mix of comedic, suspenseful, and action-packed elements. A superbly personable English dub overseen by actor Peter Fernandez (who also provides the voice of Speed) and the unforgettable opening theme song add to a viewing experience that is as iconic as it is simply entertaining. This Speed Racer Collector’s Edition presents the first four story lines of the series across 11 individual, digitally remastered episodes. “The Great Plan” is a two-part tale about a scheme to steal the Mach-5 in which Speed explains every facet of his amazing automobile. “Challenge of the Masked Racer” follows the excitement when Speed defies his father’s orders to enter a race against the mysterious Racer X. In “The Race Against the Mammoth Car,” Speed has to contend with a car that’s over 200 feet long, and not very nice. Finally, in a three-part epic entitled “The Most Dangerous Race,” Speed faces the Car Acrobatic Team led by Captain Terror. In each episode, six contestants join in the preliminary round in which the fastest one to answer two questions correctly progresses into the major “Deal or No Deal” stage. If at any time the contestant answered a question wrongly , he / she will be disqualified from the game. The contestant who won the Preliminary Round would select one out of 26 cases, hoping that the chosen case has the largest bounty. After that he/she needs to reveal six other cases before hearing the first offer. The mysterious “Banker” communicates to Wee Ping through a phone, from which he reads out the Banker’s offer to the contestant, tempting him/her with the catchphrase (pinyin:mài huò bú mài, lit. “to deal or not to deal”). As usual, if the contestant chooses not to deal he/she would have to reveal a number of unselected cases still held by the Revlon girls. But when he/she makes the deal (by pushing a stylized red button enclosed in a glass case), or rejects the final offer with only one unselected case remaining he/she will answer an important question. If he/she answers correctly he/she gets the full amount of cash offered, otherwise he/she would only take 20% of it. … |

Military History Of The Channel Islands During World War Ii $10 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Island at War is a British television series first broadcast on ITV on July 11, 2004. The series tells the story of the German Occupation of the Channel Islands, and primarily focuses on three local families: the upper-class Dorrs, the middle-class Mahys and the working-class Jonases, and four German officers. The fictional island of St. Gregory serves as a stand-in for the real-life islands Jersey and Guernsey, and the story is compiled from the events on both islands. Island at War had an estimated budget of £9,000,000 (about US$16,000,000) and was filmed on location in the Isle of Man from August 2003 to October 2003. When the series was shown in the UK, it appeared in six 70-minute episodes. It was also aired in the United States as 5 x 90-minute episodes, as part of Masterpiece Theatre, beginning on January 23, 2005. James Dorr is a member of the St. Gregory Senate, and is the deputy bailiff of the islands government. His family is well-known and respected; both his father and grandfather have served as Bailiff. He loves his wife Felicity, but often finds that she gets in his way. He sent his son Phillip to England to go to school, something that Felicity never quite forgave him for. James takes his job in the Senate very seriously, and works hard to ensure that the transition into Occupation is as painless as possible for his fellow islanders. He knows full well that the Germans are capable of killing every single person on St. Gregory, and he encourages his friends and family to avoid stirring up the waters for fear of German retaliation. He is suspicious of his wifes relationship with Baron Von Rheingarten, and doesnt trust either of them completely. When Phillip and La Salle arrive on St. Gregory to gather information, James worries… More: |

Post-Apocalyptic Webcomics: Freakangels, the Matrix Comics, Sublunary, Wandering Ones $8.41 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: FreakAngels is a free, weekly webcomic created by Eagle Award-winning writer Warren Ellis. It is written by Ellis, illustrated by Paul Duffield and published in book format by Avatar Press. The comic’s graphic style features richly detailed backdrops and characters. Warren Ellis announced the project at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, stating: “I’ve written two hundred pages and I still have no idea what it’s aboutit’s retro-punk, it’s near-future steampunk” It was launched on 2008-02-15. New installments are released in six full-colour page episodes every week, a format intended by Ellis to give the story the chance to grow naturally. The story grew out of wondering what would have happened if the Midwich Cuckoos had survived and grown to disaffected and confused 21 year olds, and the comic builds on the legacy of John Wyndham’s style of disaster fiction. Freakangels is set in a time after London has been flooded. A group, called the Freakangels, live in Whitechapel and their life encounters a dramatic bump when a girl called Alice arrives one day, bearing a shotgun and a grievance against one of their number. Ellis’ synopsis of the plot involves characters “living in a post-flood London that they might possibly have had something to do with.” As the story progresses, eleven of the FreakAngels, who all possess telepathic abilities and some of whom possess other skills, are introduced and their role in the community is expanded. Mostly together, they have created a small (roughly 300 people) civilization, complete with fresh water, watch towers, markets, home-grown vegetables and a medical clinic. However, their society is threatened externally from refugee attacks and internally from personal conflicts and crime. The first F… More: |
