But any recommendations for shows like that?

If you watch In Plain Sight, I highly recommend another USA Network program, Burn Notice, which has similar great characters and a mix of drama and humor. It is about a spy who was “burned” and cannot work as a spy any more and is sentenced to live in Miami. While the overarching plot is that of the spy trying to get reinstated, each week he also helps out a person in need. This is all usually accomplished with a lot of dry humor. (“Sometimes, the truth hurts. In these situations, I recommend lying.”) The first season is out on DVD now, and the second season will resume in January.

Also with good characters and a mix of humor and crime (like IPS and NCIS) is Bones. It is about a forensic anthropologist and her FBI partner who solve crimes with the help of her team. I mostly like it for the character interactions. The first seasons are on DVD, while the current one airs on Fox (and will be back in January on Thursday nights).

Most of your shows seem to be crime or medical based, but if you are willing to give action/adventure type procedurals a try, here are three that I like…

La Femme Nikita. The show was about an innocent woman who was framed and forced to work for a covert spy operation who believed that the ends always justified the means. It was very suspenseful, as no one was safe, the stories were complex, rather than black and white, and the characters were interesting. All five seasons are on DVD.

The Pretender. The show is about a genius who can become anyone he wants to be. He was raised by an evil group called The Centre. He escaped and is trying to atone for his sins by helping people out, while The Centre is chasing him, trying to capture him again. The entire four seasons are on DVD.

Chuck. It is about a nerdy guy (who works at a “Best Buy”-type store) who accidentally gets an entire spy database downloaded into his brain, such that he now has to work as a secret agent. Again, interesting characters, plus it is one of the most truly entertaining just for entertainment’s sake; true brain candy.

Those last three do have some over-arching plots that extend through multiple episodes/a whole season, but I wouldn’t consider them true serials in the vein of 24, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc. You can appreciate each episode as is.

I haven’t actually watched these shows, but critics have constantly raved about “The Wire” and “The Shield”, both of which are really serious crime dramas that just ended their runs. They might be worth checking out.
